EACH LAKE HAS OVER 15,000 ACRES OF WATER

Lake Sinclair was created in 1953 when the waters of the Oconee River were dammed to create a 45,000 kilowatt hydroelectric generating station at the base of the Sinclair Dam. The dam stands 104 ft high and 2,988 ft long. It consists of concrete non-overflow and spillway sections flanked by reinforced earthen embankments. The spillway has 24 30 ft wide floodgates and 2 turbine/generator assemblies. Lake Sinclair is not only the source of water for generating electricity at Sinclair Dam, but for the pumped storage operations at Wallace Dam as well.

The net effect of the power generation process is an approximate 2 ft drop or rise in Lake Sinclair's water level. This drop or rise is minimal and only affects boaters located in very shallow water. Lake Sinclair offers year-round, consistent water levels. Set in the rolling hills of the Georgia Piedmont the lake has 15,330 acres of water and 417 miles of scenic shoreline. The lake is closet to historic Milledgeville and expands across parts of Baldwin, Hancock and Putnam counties. Lake Oconee was built in 1979 when Georgia Power Company completed the Wallace Dam. It is located along the Oconee River and has provided electricity for many Georgian's. The water in Lake Oconee is recycled from Lake Sinclair to produce electricity. What this means is that water is pumped from Lake Sinclair into Lake Oconee, its dam sharing lake. It then is released through Wallace Dam back into Lake Sinclair - thus generating electricity. Lake Oconee is the second largest lake in Georgia with 19,000 acres of water and approximately 375 miles of shoreline. Lake Oconee spans across Putnam, Greene and Morgan Counties. Lake Oconee has become Georgia's premier golf and lake resort area as more and more people discover the enjoyment of lake living.
